Biodiversity: Trees

The United Nations declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests. Furthermore, May 22nd was the International Day for Biological Diversity. We thus propose that teachers raise students’ awareness of what each individual consumes each day. What do we consume? Why? What can be reduced? How?

Biodiversity consists of millions of life forms present on Earth, which are fabulously diverse and constitute a phenomenal supply of resources that we draw on each day for the following:

  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Heating
  • Building materials
  • Energy for transportation
  • Medication
  • The air we breathe

Paradoxically, human beings are the main culprits responsible for the decline of most species.
