The holidays are here- tis the season to entertain! It’s the time for family get togethers, dinners and work parties. This year, when planning your holiday party, keep in mind your green etiquette. You’ll find you not only conserve resources; you’ll save some green as well.
Starting with the invitations, save trees and postage by avoiding paper invitations. Online invites are easy to create and allow you to create invitations that are sent by email. They offer online RSVP options and other party management features.
Décor. Remember less is more, so don’t over-do it with the decor. Nature is one of your best resources for decorating in an eco-friendly way. Search your surroundings for fallen branches, sticks and leaves and use those for decor. Dim the lights. This will help create a party ambience and will save electricity too. For some festive holiday lighting, use LED lights, they use 90% less electricity than regular holiday lights.
Food. Create your menu with seasonal and locally grown foods. This supports local farmers and business, and also reduces pollution because the trip from farm to market is short. With the meal, give your guests some local and organic wine to sip on.
Dinnerware. Use washable table linens, napkins, cutlery, and dinnerware. They look more elegant than the disposable options, and they can be used over and over again. If disposables are a must, consider eco-options such as compostable plates, utensild and cups.
Cleaning up. Party’s over. Time to clean up. During cleanup it’s important to recycle. Any item that can be reused should be kept for that purpose. Remember to put food scraps into your compost bin. Use eco-friendly cleaning supplies for a healthy home after your party.
Happy Holidays!
