From Field to Table

Sophia Chan-Combrink

Skip the indoor supermarkets this summer and head straight to your local farmer’s markets. It’s that time of year again where everything is in bloom and the tastiest produce of the summer season is available nearby.
There are many reasons why we should support farmer’s markets. Not least of which is the reduction of “food miles” or the number of miles (or kilometers) that your produce travels to get to your table – think of the fossil fuels used to transport them. No longer do your strawberries have to travel all the way from California (if you buy them in the winter), they are in season in your area now! Also, you get to speak directly with the growers themselves and get more acquainted with where your food comes from and how it’s grown (really important to me as a mom trying to feed my family organic produce).

If you want to go one step further, you can head up to the local farms yourself and pick your own produce. In addition to being a fun outing with friends and family, you can enjoy the gorgeous sunshine that most of us haven’t had in the last six or seven months. I will certainly be planning a trip to go strawberry picking with my toddler as the plants are the perfect size for her to pick from.

Go on the internet and search for farmer’s markets and see what tasty treats await you in your area.
