I was in my toddler’s art class the other day when I realized that the materials that we use in that class could be talked about in this blog. This is because most of the materials we used would have been destined for the trash or recycling bins but were rescued and “re-purposed” in a children’s art class!
If you have young children like me and have things like last year’s calendar, scrap pieces of fabric or old magazines, save them and use them in your child’s arts and crafts projects. At my house, we have a big “Arts and Crafts” box that we keep all these bits and pieces in. My two year old loves digging in there and seeing what she can use to create her latest masterpiece. Other things that I keep are empty toilet rolls (they make great musical shakers when you seal both ends with beans inside), pinecones (they make beautiful biodegradable birdfeeders when you roll them in peanut butter and bird seeds), and used popsicle sticks (they can be transformed into mini-kites with some glue, tissue paper and yarn).
I know that there are some great arts and crafts stores out there with some really enticing products but look at what you have at home first before you go out and buy. Arts and crafts projects are a super way to reuse materials in your house that you would have otherwise discarded.
Try it and you will never look at an empty cereal box the same way again!
