Go organic without breaking the bank

Simple Green Action

Want to start eating organic foods but are afraid your grocery bill will go sky-high? No worries!

Here is some advice to go by:

  • Start your foray into organic foods by choosing basic items that are certified organic. Rice, pasta, fruits and vegetables can easily be a quarter of your shopping cart. It’s a great place to start!
  • Get acquainted with community kitchens. They are a great way to save money, because you’ll be buying organic foods in larger quantities. As a bonus, it’s a wonderful opportunity to share recipes with others, make meals in advance and say goodbye to store-bought frozen meals!
  • Sign up for Équiterre’s organic food baskets (www.equiterre.org). You’ll be supporting organic farming by buying a part of their crops in advance. This translates into a weekly basket of fresh vegetables. Hungry yet?
  • Consult the CARTC (Conseil des appellations réservées et des termes valorisants du Québec) (www.cartvquebec.com) or the Certified Organic Associations of British Columbia (www.certifiedorganic.bc.ca/) to find out more about organic certification. You’ll see – it’s strictly controlled and less complicated that you may think!
